I can trace back my entire professional career to sitting in the library in 6th grade and hearing a terrible MIDI version of the overworld theme to Final Fantasy 7. It was in a very buggy home-brew game that I was playing, and the quality was... well, it was MIDI, but it did the trick. I remember thinking that if I ever wrote a piece of music that sounded that good, I would feel like a success.
My passion for writing music really kicked off in 2002. A friend taught me to write "tracker" style, which is like a programmer's way of coding music. In 2011 I got my degree in Music Education from Virginia Commonwealth University, and have continued to write music for personal and professional projects.
In 2004 I started creating short videos in high school (and using my music experience to score them), which transitioned to filming concerts, performances, weddings, and other events throughout college. In 2012 I got hired to fly to Mexico and film an End-of-the-World party at the Mayan Ruins for 12/21/2012 and I haven't stopped traveling or filming since.
In 2009 I began to take my experience with video and adapt to photography. In 2011 I took on my first architectural photography job and have shot dozens of high-end residential and commercial spaces since, as well as dozens of live, fast-paced events.
All of these skills fuel the others. I edit videos better because I understand how they interact with music, as well as how the rhythm and pacing of an edit can affect the viewer. I learned to frame shots in videos better thanks to my time spent doing photography. My photography benefits from deeply understanding various musical concepts -- balance, contrast, themes, dynamic range.
"Jack of all trades, master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one."
I think that experience should never be siloed, and connections can always be made from one field to another. And I believe that my strengths as a videographer, photographer, and composer are all assisted by the other skills, and that the more I learn about any field, the better I'll get at these.
So I'll never stop learning.
